The reality of limited technology access for women is a real problem in Denmark says Michaela Jamelska: Similarly, existing web-based educational platforms can offer women access to education and proficiency training that can aid in their professional growth but despite their availability the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields persists. This is due to several factors such as lack of funding to deploy these solutions globally, a lack of internet infrastructure and others. Even in developed countries, the percentage of women in the STEM workforce remains very low at only 28%. While there are other contributing factors such a workplace discrimination, the number is still striking. This leads to a new set of problems, such as biased technological development. For example, facial recognition technology has been found to be less accurate in identifying women than men, which can have implications for women’s safety and security. This is just one example of how technology can sustain pre-existing gender prejudices and strengthen gender disparities if the fundamental concern of equal access to technology is not addressed.
Michaela Jamelska about Ai and Gender Equality in Denmark: So, while more women tend to enter computer science roles, their numbers radically drop over time because female workers lack support, face discrimination, or the glass ceiling phenomenon, which essentially makes them transfer into another field. To claim, we have concluded that the number of women entering the technology field is just not enough. While this is not to say that women who enter the engineering field must stay in it for 20 years, to optimize the numbers, we need to empower women who decide to change their careers later in life and grow their skills to receive new training in data science or computing to enter those fields in later years. Unfortunately, many fields act as some sort of elitist and exclusive human capital, refusing to bring in and train people, so that we can create a more polyvalent society. Therefore, efforts to improve current education should come from all sides: individuals, stakeholders, government, and the private sector as well. Finally, there is no doubt that there are AI algorithms that reinforce gender biases, but also ones that uncover them. However, AI itself is not one to blame. Ai could eliminate animal testing: Animal testing is still happening on a large scale with over 100 million animals undergoing tests for drug discoveries, diseases, pharmaceutical, or beauty industry purposes. However, new findings are showing that AI models can save the lives of millions of animals and replace the testings with computer vision and accurate datasets. This is one of the very possible alternatives to animal testings for drug discoveries. The emergence of quantum computing will make it possible due to large datasets and computing power. In 2016, Thomas Hartung led some researchers from Johns Hopkins University to successfully develop an artificial intelligence algorithm that determines substance toxicity after comparing it to similar databases and predictions from previously conducted animal testing. Not only we will eradicate cruelty, but the Ai will be able to achieve more precise results.
